About World History

Making the story of humanity accessible, visual, and engaging.

Our Mission

World History is an open project dedicated to making the vast tapestry of human history approachable and easy to explore. We believe that understanding where and when events happened is essential to truly grasping the flow of history, and that a geographic, visual approach is the most natural way to achieve this.

Why a Map?

Traditional history education often presents events as isolated facts and dates. But history didn't happen in a vacuum -- it unfolded across real places on our planet. By placing events on a world map with an interactive timeline, we help readers visualize the spatial relationships between civilizations, wars, discoveries, and cultural movements.

When you can see that the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty existed simultaneously on opposite ends of the Silk Road, or that the agricultural revolution happened independently in multiple regions, history transforms from a list of dates into a living, interconnected story.

How It Works

Use the timeline at the bottom of the map to travel through 12,000 years of history. Historical events appear as dots on the map, sized by their geographic scope. Hover over a dot to see its name and dates. Click to open a detailed summary with links to learn more.

Create an account to save your favorite events, leave comments, and customize your viewing experience. We encourage community contributions through the comment system -- if you have additional context or sources for an event, share them with fellow history enthusiasts.

Sources and Attribution

Event summaries and data are sourced from Wikipedia and other open educational resources, used under Creative Commons licensing. Map tiles are provided by CARTO using OpenStreetMap data.

Contributing

This project is a labor of love and continuously growing. If you're a history enthusiast, educator, or developer interested in contributing events, corrections, or features, we'd love to hear from you. Use the comment system on events to suggest improvements, or reach out through our community channels.
